What do you think of when and/ or if you have ever choreographed on the spot? Is it tactical? Is it free? Is it technical or do you find yourself doing things you never knew your body was capable of doing? I like to choreograph via videotaping myself improv sometimes... and sometimes there are great moments that catch my eye. What about you?

I have choreographed on the spot, both in class and on stage...for me, it's both technical and freeing, but for others the idea of improvising is anxiety provoking at best. I urge every dancer to explore the perimeters of improvisation, even in small doses.
Has anyone ever tried just
Has anyone ever tried just choreographing just one body part and working from there? I just did.....loved it!
Yes we actually did for BPM
Yes we actually did for BPM for our opening number. Was a big challenge for tap as you are so used to moving straight to rhythms & layering. We started our focus on the feet actually which the objective of writing our names in 1, 2 & 3 dimensions. Our feet were glued to the floor as we were working on scraping, sliding and other ways to make shape, movement and sound.
We creating some really interesting stuff!
I myself come up with one
I myself come up with one small detail I would like to teach with and embellish it closer towards the time before my class. At Debbie Reynolds I have a big variance in level so I am always finding I need to be flexible and offer an on-the-fly style. So for me it is a very fine line of working with your students, along with a certain amount of structure, knowing full well this could all change depending on who rocks up to your class.
The amount of times I have prepared for a class to the finest detail, walk in the door and go "mmmm that is not going to work...." I am sure we have all been there. We can then choose to teach what we prepared or adapt and work with your students grabbing some of what you have prepared and the rest on-the-fly.
As I teach Tap speed is always a concern so again the need to have a very flexible approach to your class. One of my classes is a beg/int and as we all know that is a HUGE range - we have absolute beginners on one side and intermediates on the other!
There is nothing better than having your students inspire you and push you to new levels and limits.
Indeed it is a very touching
Indeed it is a very touching and never-ending research in finding the ways to create!
Thank you for the question!
There are as many ways to do things, as many people there are!
I find it not easy to choreograph on the spot, because one has to be 100% relaxed, to create out of authentic movement!
Sometimes i listen to the music a few times, and mark big movements, provoked by the emotions, and then, in class make technical transitions and connections between those big movements.
But basically - i follow the movement, that my body leads me to. Because the body is very sensitive, responding to the moment, doing the way of your mood here and now, because any other time you'd do it differently! So, yeah, the emotion is the motor for me.
Have fun!+ good luck!

Well, I must admit I
Well, I must admit I routinely choreograph on the spot! I feel so free and I let the music move me. I also wake up routinely in the middle of the night...2am-4am and some of my best work comes out during those hours. I often dream about my choreography...I remember most of it and set it on my dancers. It is so beautiful to see your dreams come to life!!
On rare occasion do I write my choreography down...but I always video tape as I choreograph. It serves as a great tool and you can look at it to see what you like and what you don't like.
Mostly I had the music
Mostly I had the music first. I listened to the music, listened inside, what kind of feelings I get and then the movements came. I had to try the movements, wrote them down and sometimes I made a tape. You can do this only before teaching. Normaly I did the new choreos every 3 or 6 months in the holiday seasons because we planed for this time in the school, I worked.
Many times i feel like the
Many times i feel like the ballet class is to small for getting inspiration,so i imagine my self or others in diffrent spaces , in real situations. How it will look for example my choreography in a bus station, how does it feel and what are the reaction. I create an image , like a picture, that i wrrite as usual and than i start constracting over. I move my self from place to place. I film as usual to see the process but many times in front of the camera my students look false , to concentrated to bring the correct mood. I find it easyer to create directly when i am close to people; i used to preapere some structures before but most of the times dancers inspire me with there body in a diffrent direction, so i decided to create the ideas , invent the space and to give them clues about the character that i am interested in. I am loking for original like all of u probably.
I cant tell you how many
I cant tell you how many times I have been choreographing and got mad because I did not tape what I was doing! But I usually choreograph when Im walking my dogs, and I try to remember the choreography until I teach it the next day. I agree, sometimes you get some wonderful movement out of yourself, but im not one to choreo on the spot in class.
