What are the ideas floating about in regards to how people dress for dance classes? To be more specific: lyrical and jazz!
Watching auditions I've been to or such auditions as SYTYCD I notice that less and less people are wearing clothing that really compliments their technique. Loose looks fantastic and definitely helps create a certain image if you want to look soft (I get that), but what does that say to choreographers and casting directors in regards to technique?
In class I can not condone wearing something which masks a bent leg or sat in hip. How does everyone else feel about this? What we do in class will also reflect our manners at auditions also, right? Just wondering! :-)

Hey NIcolae, nice notes you
Hey NIcolae, nice notes you have written here, its great to get that perspective from you!
We dress how we feell! But
We dress how we feell! But dancers should have an esthetic sense more developed than other people, less body complex as well ( because we dance like we are). In the dance classes the favorite color is black , size large....so they are alwais covering there shapes, there mood, and of course my choreogrphy is looking diffrent that i imagine. I sey dress like u realy feel, not like u are used to, use more colors, be happy because u are a dancer and u can express everything with your body.Let us see your knees, arms and hips when they create in space a beautiful shape.Let us be inspire by your body!
Thanks for that! Much
Thanks for that! Much appreciated! So many times with my agency last year they would ask us to "be ready to move" or look hip- hop but not ghetto, and I would get type cast out based on what I was wearing! (Definitely the case for the BRATZ movie auditions). It's kind of embarrassing to be quite honest. Anywho, thank you for that, notes taken!!!
:-)
I think that some people,
I think that some people, when it comes to auditions, dont have the technique required for the job and so will "dress for success" hoping they look cute enough to get past the first cut, which is quite possible when there are hundreds of people at an audition, but it usually can only get you so far. Dress for the part is important but dont dress up like a solid gold dancer to get a part in you got served! Don't dress up like a dancer on Snoops video if you want to do nutcracker. Sometimes crossing over helps though. I would dress like a dancer on Snoops video if I were auditioning for a character part in Cirque de Soleil only because you will usually have to wear an outfit like that and stiil be able to display your technique in it!
As far as class, yes you need to see your lines and body placement, at least in Jazz, Ballet, and Comtemporary. I would even think hip hop and jazz funk to a point! But in class, you are in training mode and should wear things that are comfortable but not loose and baggy, after all, you do want to know what your body is doing in class right?
