To make improvements in technique class is to understand "one step at a time". The opportunity to make progress and improve line, technique, commitment, and center during class, is to understand the question "How do you eat an elephant?" The answer is ONE-BITE-AT-A-TIME. Take one issue that needs addressing, focus on that issue and make the correction. Give yourself time to memorize your new self and self-discovery...muscle memory, then move to the next issue. Especially with young dancers, designing the time and opportunity to focus (during progressions or barre work) on pieces of the puzzle, will, in the end, come to a complete portrait.
Besides, you don't want to overindulge in the consumption of elephants:)

Thanks, I needed this info! The more info I can get on teaching the better. I am going to plan my intermediate jazz class focusing on arm placement today. Terrific!

How dare you try to make my favorite animal extinct! :-) Funny you should mention puzzle Nichelle, that is what I use for my younger students, expressing that when you are a baby and you start to stand, you often fall because your brain is working on your body puzzle! Once it knows how the body puzzle works, you can stand and not fall! Hmmmmm....Idea.....

Thanks for stating this - the imagery is perfect. This is one of the hardest things to remember when teaching beginners. There is SO much and it is hard to avoid overloading them with information. I've found that planning a class (for a day, a week, or even a month) that directly focus on one or two "pieces of the puzzle" really helps students to grow. It allows them to invest fully in the issue and deepen their understanding in a noticeable way so that they are encouraged to continue fighting and working for improvement in all areas.
