So we have a new dance competition show on TV "Superstars of Dance". I would love to hear thoughts from those of you who watched the premiere.
Here are mine (if you're interested): I was really disappointed!
- First by the production's quality. It seemed we were back on Eurovision in the 90s. Nothing wrong with the 90s, but considering all the competition/reality shows that are flooding our tv channels, I would have thought it would look much better (same producers too).
- Second: filming! Are we EVER going to have cameramen/editors able to show dance on TV???? Where are the feet? Where are the lines?
- Third: REPLACE THE HOSTS!!!! AWWWWWW
- Fourth, most performances were quite mediocre (not all... that Tango really tickled my feet and stirred my stomach). I know not being live doesn't help, but some performances in "so you think you can dance" for example seemed to have more life than on Superstars.
On the positive side, it's cool to see dances from all over the world :)
Here's a question: how do you arbitrate between such different styles of dance? What do you base yourself on, besides performance level? I mean, are all judges experts in traditional chinese and indian and south african and russian, etc dance? I think not... so?
Your turn now...

I totally agree! I was
I totally agree! I was soooooo disappointed. All the hype about the show and it was very amateur... Another question I would like to bring up is how do you have the judges from the same countries as the competitors? Even though the country does not judge their own team, you know they subconsciously are biased. What is to keep them from scoring the other countries low/average...just enough to keep their country on top. And the host does stink...so boring. I was really disappointed and probably will not watch again.
I'm personally nervous about
I'm personally nervous about how to compare so many different styles of dance with so many different techniques. I agree with Ahn. Are ALL the judges experts in ALL the types of dance presented? I don't think so and I'm not sure if I think that's fair.
Ah yes this show was not
Ah yes this show was not what I expected....
International Dance colliding in a competition arena is something we would all enjoy I think. But as Anh points out I do not believe we are seeing any extraordinary talent and when countries are being represented we should be seeing the best of the best.
I however do not know their process in which they are selecting competitors. Makes sense that the selection process would be similar to say the olympics. An open opportunity for a country to select whom they think will represent the very best of their country.
The Tango was a standout for me. A close second was the Gumboot team! I wonder why:)
Yes there is much to be said about the hosts.... no inspiration or drive for the audience or competitors. As we well know the hosts need to work as much as the performers do.
I think as a judge you need to take in the entire performance as there are many times you never fully understand everything (one of the wonders of life). To be judged is to open up to your audience and share and as a judge you need to hold the upmost respect to this. Talent, technique, tricks and so on are all part of the performance but the chemistry is what brings it all together, without this you have no driving vehicle.
So we may well find some things have been tweaked for next week but I too am interested to hear what others have to say?
