Just thought that this would be a great place for dancers/teachers to share their favorites. I love discovering new music to use for dancing/choreography and for classes. As was stated in another "finding music" thread, a wonderful way to do this is by word-of-mouth. So, please share with us the albums and artists you LOVE.
P.S. Please include if you can HOW you use your choices. For example, if you use a particular album or artist in class vs. for choreography, let us know! Thanks.

Hey Adam, What was the song
Hey Adam,
What was the song you used for the 2009 Phoenix Intermediate Room?
It was such a cool dance and I loved dancing to it!
Hello ello ello! Well i love
Hello ello ello! Well i love extra biazzare music for contemporary style pieces. For some really quirky songs... CocoRosie is my favorite. I love everything off the album, The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn:) Then there is Nouvelle Vague and of course Portishead. But... always room for more on my playlist. Anything that I must listen and dance to?
Great suggestions, everyone!
Great suggestions, everyone! Keep them coming!!
Hi all! I feel as though
Hi all! I feel as though there are so many great artists and songs out there that I'm still on the search for new and interesting stuff that I haven't heard before! That being said I recently discoverd Zoe Keating. She is a cellist and her work is fantastic, I fell in love with it after seeing a work set to two of her pieces from her album "One Cello x 16: natoma".
Happy Listening!
Oh. . . music I love. . .
Oh. . . music I love. . . the possibilities. . . I'd use any of these for class or choreography, although almost all of my choreographic work these days is to live original music.
- Woven Hand / 16 Horsepower - amazing gothic bluegrass sound
- Kate Nash - "Pumpkin Soup" is great for waking people up and getting them happy
- Aesop Rock - "None Shall Pass" - smart rap, good beat for class warm-up or across the floor
- Massive Attack - Mezzanine is just a fabulous album when you want to be unapologetically dark and fierce
- Bobby McFerrin's "Circlesongs" are just beautiful for anything lyrical and circular and flowing
- Deathcab for Cutie's "I will possess your heart" is across-the-floor-tastic or for a center combo
- Nina Simone - any of it, for anything, ever. She's amazing. "I Put a Spell on You" is GREAT for a drawn-out tortuous glamourous develope combo.
- Yeah Yeah Yeahs - fun!
- Nebulo and Deaf Center - both create electronic ambient music that I love for floorwork and mood-setting
- Zum - gypsy tango group of incredible musicians. I choreographed a piece called "Panic! at the Milonga" to their music and it is still one of my favourite pieces.
So many more. . . so many, but this is my 1st forum post and I don't want to go overboard.
I want to hear from other people - I'm always on the prowl for more music.
Hi Adam, I am choreographing
Hi Adam, I am choreographing a dance for my school in your jazz style that you teach at Phoenix (in NZ). I was wondering if you had any good songs I could do it to? I'm thinking along the lines of Ramalama and Sweet Melody. More the tempo of Ramalama though. If you had any suggestions that would be great! Cheers.
The first album by Nikka
The first album by Nikka Costa is awesome! It has music for just about everything, warm ups, across the floor, class choreography and choreography for solos and groups!
Boy, Im gonna live in this forum!
