SpongeBob SquarePants is Headed to Broadway!
Arrr you ready, dancers? Ohhhh....who lives in a pineapple under the - Broadway?
That's right - one of your favorite childhood cartoons is headed to the Great White Way. A SpongeBob SquarePants musical will open this Fall in NYC. The show originally premiered in Chicago in the spring of 2016, and many of the original cast members will be transferring with the production.
The musical follows SpongeBob and the other colorful characters of Bikini Bottom as they work to save their city from destruction. It will feature original songs from superstars such as David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Sara Bareilles, and John Legend. Each musician wrote a song for a specific moment in the plot of the show, so though the styles are all different, everything works together. The show also features choreography by 'Newsies' choreographer Christopher Gattelli.
Previews are scheduled to begin at the Palace Theatre on November 6th, and the show will officially open on December 4th. And don't panic - tickets aren't on sale until June 26th.
ABT Dancer Risks Life To Save Man on Subway Tracks
Amidst all of the terrible news from this weekend, here's a bright light: an ABT dancer has saved the life of a New York City homeless man after he fell onto the subway tracks on Saturday night.
Gray Davis was returning from the Metropolitan Opera after watching his wife, fellow ABT dancer Cassandra Trenary, perform in The Golden Cockerel He and his wife were waiting for the train at 72nd Street and Broadway when he saw a man fall onto the tracks.
Davis told The New York Times that "people were screaming to get help. But nobody jumped down. So I jumped down."
The man had hit his head on the tracks and was unconscious, so Davis lifted him up out of the tracks and onto the platform. But he wasn't out of danger yet - as he lifted the man to safety, Davis heard the rumble of an oncoming train. Davis was able to use his training to swing his leg up onto the platform and climb to safety just in time.
Davis has been recovering from a herniated disk injury: Still, he jumped onto the tracks, risking his dance career (aside from his life altogether!)
Police have arrested a 23-year old woman in connection with the incident. We're so glad Davis was there to help - ABT has a hero amongst their ranks!

World of Dance: It’s a Hit!
Good news pluggers, the new TV show World of Dance is the most-watched summer alternative series debut in nine years! The show aired at 10:00 pm on Tuesday evening, and now it’s everywhere. Your Instagram feed, your Facebook wall, and your Twitter are most likely blowing up with all things World of Dance right now.
The show's scoring method is similar to the way that dancers are scored at a regular competition. The judges, Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough, and NE-YO, rate the talent based on performance, technique, choreography, creativity, and presentation. Each category is worth 20 points for a possible grand total of 100. In order to pass the qualifying round contestants must average a score of 80 or higher.
So far they've only shown one dance group get cut (sad day for the clogging group). We also saw some familiar faces make an appearance, such as Les Twins, Mari & Keone, and Kinjaz. Was this a publicity stunt?... Probably, but no ones really complaining, because let's face it, these dancers are amazing. In a nutshell, so far so good, let's see how the rest of the season pans out.
Forget the Vows... Remember Your Choreography!
Wedding season is upon us pluggers, which means you’ve got a long list of things to do before the bride and groom say “I do.”
- Step one: Find the perfect wedding date.
- Step two: Buy the perfect wedding gift.
- Step three: Brush up on your choreography skills?
Yes, you heard correctly, if you're planning on being a bridesmaid or groomsmen anytime soon you may be asked to take the stage. It’s not unusual for the bride and groom to perform a little choreography during their first dance as husband and wife, but lately wedding dances are on a whole new level. Now, we’re seeing professional choreography and some serious talent.
One of the most memorable wedding dances from last year was performed by Melissa Molinaro and her fellow bridesmaids. During the reception she delivered the performance of a lifetime for her husband, and her video went viral. Just take a look at the video, and you’ll see what we mean…
