Cats Musical Theatre

Cats is one of the most well known Broadway shows in history. Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber & based on T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, it ran on Broadway from 1982 - 2000 (it currently holds the title for the 4th longest-running show), and was revived from 2016 - 2017. It's also been performed on the West End, toured around the world, and was made into a 'Great Performances' film in 1998. There's been quite a bit of reporting recently that another full-length film has been in the works, and, just last week, we got some details.

According to Playbill, the official Cats movie will begin filming in November. It will be produced by Universal Pictures and Working Title and directed by Tom Hooper, who all previously collaborated on the 2012 film adaptation of Les Misérables. Andrew Lloyd Webber will also be involved, and will reportedly be writing new material for the film.

The musical was originally choreographed by British dancer Gillian Lynne (who, fun fact, just had a West End theater named after her). However, it appears that this version will be going a different direction, because Royal Ballet choreographer Wayne McGregor has agreed to work on the film. (He'll be holding casting calls this summer. Interested? get audition information here). McGregor was the movement director for Webber's former production of Woman in White, and he's known for his theatricality and physicality. There's no release date yet, but we'll definitely be interested to see what he McGregor does with this iconic show!
