Bio

Helen studied modern dance and jazz with UKA Dance, and trained extensively in commercial dance before moving into her contemporary and choreogaphic practice. Helen is a DDTAL Gradute with Trinity Laban, and a qualified Creative Practioner with Creative Alliance. She is also a Cuban rhythms and salsa instructor. Helen works across the U.K. and internationally as a teacher, choreographer and performer, specialising in dance-theatre and movement direction.

As a freelance artist Helen has worked with Def Motion, the Birmingham Royal Ballet, the DanceXchange, Canela Fina, and the BBC. Helen works as choreographer for Midland’s Actor’s Theatre, and is founder of new dance & poetry initiative, ‘Beyond Words’. Also a poet, she has created two dance-poetry films: ‘Naked’ dircted by Redstorm Productions, and ‘Rope’ an experimental short by Paul Stringer.

Helen’s choreographic work includes ‘Last Act’ performed as part of the Birmingham Literature Festival; ‘Marina’ a solo work devised and performed at The Southbank Centre for the Poetry International Festival; and ‘Beyond Words‘, a dance piece combining contemporary movement with sign language, performed as part of The Birmingham Weekender Festival 2017. Helen has been awarded support by Arts Council England on three other major dance & theatre projects, including 'The Dog Fight' showcased at The Arena Theatre in March 2018. She is currently working as choreographer with Midland’s Actor’s Theatre on a site-specific production 'Descent'.
