Strike and Release
A groove exercise built on the contrast between striking into a picture and releasing out of it. Strike like someone is taking a snapshot of you. Be precise and confident, and hold each picture as long as you can before it snaps into the next one. Four clean pictures go to the right, to the left, up and down, landing on the snares.
Then comes the contrast. Strike into a shape, and release into it without muscling through. The motion happens, you don't force it. First the strike lands on the even counts, then on the odd counts, then both parts go together.
